• Haspelmath (1993) argues that the direction of morphological derivation correlates with the likelihood that the event can occur spontaneously—events more likely to occur spontaneously are lexicalized in their morphologically basic form as words denoting non-causative COS predicates (e.g. melt), while those less likely to occur spontaneously are lexicalized in their morphologically basic form as words denoting causatives (e.g. break).
